The album is a conceptual one based around the idea of chillout music for machines. I'm fascinated by questions around consciousness and artificial intelligence - how could we ever know that an AI was conscious? One idea which resonates with me is that the production and appreciation of art would be a good indicator - art implies imagination, an understanding of metaphor, an audience (well, maybe not for the producer of niche electronica...), and the aesthetic value of going beyond basic function and rules. Which got me wondering what music conscious machines would make or listen to.
Chillout music for factory robots after a long day making things for people, lounge jazz for a tractor, an old submarine alone with its thoughts at the bottom of the ocean... Soothing clanks, distortion, more distortion... If heartbeat pulses and gentle synths make for relaxing human music, then surely machines would want the distant memories of the sounds of engines, production lines, and grinding gears? Or maybe they're all just vibing to post-2000 Autechre.
